2011 | The Howling | Werewolves
16 years after the disaster called "Howling: New Moon Rising" was released, the eighth film in the completely disjointed "The Howling" series came out and is often seen as a kind of reboot.
I was 100 percent sure that things could only get a lot better after the last film, I was wrong. And how wrong. "The Howling: Reborn" is a pretentious piece of shit. I think the producers saw "Twilight" and its success and realized that there is another werewolf franchise lying around that nobody wants because it is garbage and they bought the rights to it. I can’t explain this film to myself in any other way. They used the name of a more or less established franchise whose later films most people see as garbage to promote their own garbage.
Direction and editing are terrible, the color grading is heavily inspired by "Twilight" and looks like a bad 2011 Instagram filter has been put over the film and the soundtrack is, with one painful exception, terrible. This exception is "The Killing Moon" (haha, moon, get it?) by Echo & The Bunnymen. Why do I specifically mention the song? Because the song plays in the opening of the theatrical cut of "Donnie Darko", my favorite film, and I hope that in future I won't have to think about this piece of shit every time I watch the film.
You have to give the film that there is more werewolf action here than in the last 4 films together, but this action is bad and the werewolves and effects look bad. In addition, the werewolf pack consists of the dumbest and most wannabe edgy assholes ever.
The biggest problem for me was definitely the writing, the dialogues and what the film thinks it is. Dialogues and plots are written the way an angsty teen who was confronted with the problems of life for the first time would dream them. But not in the justified kind of angsty, but the stupidly meaningless and pretentious kind. People don't talk like the characters in the film do. The film is full of wananbe meaningful and self aware narration that is completely dumb and pretentious. The film thinks it is saying something, but the words that come out of the characters' mouths and the shit that the narrator talks about are empty pretentious nothingness. In addition, the plot plot is utterly ridiculous with bad teen garbage. I can’t emphasize enough how pretentious and bad the writing is.
The film feels like if Wes Craven's "Cursed" and his "My Soul to Take" had dirty meaningless sex and gave birth to a bastard child who is missing everything that made sure that the two films were not total garbage.
