coming back to write about this a few days after seeing it but i can’t get this film off my mind. makes u wallow in it’s filth and bleakness in that same way Requiem for a Dream does. adored the use of long takes, and how immersive they can be. at one point we follow Brandon on a jog for five uncut, consecutive minutes after one of the more uncomfortable scenes & it felt like being put directly in his shoes & like i was clearing my head and dealing with that discomfort alongside him, and i loved that a lot. also felt that the colour palette was really powerful and was impressed at how unapologetic the film was in exploring the themes. it’s a film about sex addiction & it doesn’t shy away from making you feel that, even when it makes for a viewing experience most wouldn’t be comfortable having. honestly, i was barely comfortable with it, but to quote the most generic but true line ever- “that’s the point”. the film grabs you by the throat & makes you gawk at the ugly & retched truth of this addiction, and how hollow & self-destructive it is. it’s uncomfortable bc it’s so believable, & Fassbender sells it SO so well. the total vacancy present in his eyes at all times is astounding.
for or better or worse this is the first time
i’ve properly cried to a sex scene, and i don’t really know if they were anxious tears or emotional tears, but regardless the entire last twenty minutes are devastating and provocative and gorgeous and SO artsy i loved them.

initially rated 3 1/2, now a perfect 5
