Absolute Cinema
I hate myself for skipping this when it was released in 2020. The film features a fantastic bunch of actors, each bringing something unique, and every character leaves a lasting impression. The story is terrifying, creepy, and unsettling in the best way. Even the location plays a huge role. The secluded house in the middle of an almost jungle-like setting feels like another character in the film, adding greatly to the atmosphere.
Despite being an indie production, the film never feels small because it gradually immerses you into its world. It carefully establishes the internal lives of the characters first and then pulls the audience into the story, making it easy to root for them. The two main characters are essentially fighting two battles at once: the terrifying situation inside the house and the internal conflicts within their families, who constantly restrict them. This dual struggle makes you want to see them succeed on both fronts, and the film delivers powerful moments throughout. The performances across the board are excellent, with no weak link.
I was already fond of the director’s recent work, the show Black, White and Gray – Love Kills, which itself deserves a separate appreciation review. Discovering that the director had already made a debut film back in 2020 made this watch even more exciting.
