In 1890, Pontus, the starving writer, wanders the streets of Christiania, in search of love and a chance to get his work published. All he meets is defeat and suffering while his sense of reality is withering. One moment he is delighted and the next he curses everybody. All the time he manages to maintain human dignity and pride.

Remember reading the book about 2 years back while living in St. Olavs Place in Oslo, which is a key part of the book. For some reason that had a lot of effect on my experience reading it. It was like I could vividly follow the character trough my own neighbourhood. Definitely helps having lived in Oslo most of my life of course. But it felt like I was time travelling. It’s one of the best novels I’ve read and the movie adaption is pretty faithful to the novel, loved this as well - the themes are timeless. One of the best Norwegian books of all time and the movie is also incredible.. definitely not shot in Oslo tho, It was shot in Stockholm. Highly recommended!
