The first half of this movie is honestly a bore, you’d have to be a really patient person to get reeled into the story. But once the second half starts, it filled with tremendous suspense and excitement and really gets me wondering for what comes next. The characters’ roles change so rapidly and it sometimes gets hard to figure out who’s the true antagonist. The editing and cinematography are obviously key to this film’s success. Without it, it wouldn’t able to achieve the breathtaking visuals. Whatever happens in this movie is honestly a mystery to me, there’s corruption within religion and there’s also enlightenment. Although I don’t fully understand the gist of this film, that’s not gonna stop me from appreciating it.

After the macho action-packed "The Valiant Ones", King Hu made what can only be described as a Buddhist farce where all the stylized acting and staging Hu used in his previous films to dramatic or cathartic effect are re-appropriated this time to highlight the absurdity of his characters in this shaggy dog narrative. The humor though is always respectful of the religion that forms the center of the film, as it ultimately serves the film's wonderful story about the meaninglessness of worldly schemes and desires.
