Mirrors my and I assume many others experience of Japan, having gone there with images from cultural exports (in this case Wenders’ key influence is Ozu, but could be anime or anything else), and found that the world we fell in love with is inaccessible, but something new forms with which we can start to build a relationship with. Wenders lets the images speak for themselves mostly, and they’re fascinating. Also with some great interviews with Ozu’s colleagues, and a brief but brilliant appearance from Werner Herzog.
