damn.. ted raimi works well as a psychotic murderer
this is just a really fun B-movie slasher / splatter film about a man who rents out a couples spare room out, he seems like a normal conventional dude, but he actually skins a bunch of prostitutes and wears their skin. while all this is happening, a junkie prostitute who he formally attacked yet survived tries to hunt him down. first of all, ted raimi’s performance was definitely a highlight of this film, he really encapsulates the characters he’s trying to portray and is unironically a petrifying horror villain, on the other hand sold other performances can be quite underwhelming in comparison, but i really didn’t mind all that much. the gore in this is truly great : this film count amazing gruesome special effects , and the oozing gore really intensifies the film : cutting off skin makes some really fun scenes. i love how this is just the horror equivalent to a john waters flick, i will eat up the trashy exploitative atmosphere each time without fail!! i just love how this has som many elements of 80s horror aswell. with all that being said, i honestly think the 3rd act is kinda lackluster : it ends abruptly and they could’ve done more, and they left loads of unanswered plot holes. the narrative is erratic and the pacing is slow. also it has a scene which hasn’t aged the best, the serial killer skins his black friend and puts on a blaccent, while that scene wouldn’t fly today i understand this film was like 30 years ago, and that scene in general is quiet an intense scene. a graphic 90s horror flick with a great performance from ted raimi and really memorable graphic scenes, i will always love indie horror but the thing holding this back is the last act just isn’t really the ending which i think concludes the heavily built up story
