This documentary heavily features David Allen Coe; he’s the top billed artist in the credits, he has 3 performances over the runtime, his truck driving segments are the throughline to the narrative, he’s for all intents and purposes the main character of the movie. Which is cool with me, cause I personally enjoy the shit out of (most of) his music, but to act like he’s the main character of the Outlaw Country movement is pretty funny.
David Allen Coe is not the main character of the Outlaw Country family, he is the drunk uncle in the corner screaming racial slurs that haven’t been used since before Brown v. The Board of Education. And when called racist he says, “Whaaaaaat? I’m jokin! Can’t a guy make a joke no more! You never heard of satire, mothafucka?”
Completely unrelated but Townes Van Zandt making Uncle Seymour cry by playing “Waitin’ Around to Die” is one of the most moving real life moments ever captured on film. Chills every time
