I felt physically sick watching The Flowers of War. To think this is just a tame version of true events really makes me wonder how humans can be so despicable and cruel. I was surprised to see that this film has a low score on Rotten Tomatoes, but reading the reviews and comments there amd on Reddit, it all made sense: people (specifically those in the West who worship Japan) can't stand to think the Japanese committed these atrocities and more, but history needs to be told and learned from so these things don't happen again. There were a some flaws technically with the film, like the pacing of the plot, but the cast, especially Christian Bale and Zhang Xinyi, did an incredible job considering the brutality of the story. It's a visually stunning film for sure, but I can't stomach watching it again any time soon.
