“Django 2 - Il grande ritorno” is the only official sequel to Sergio Corbucci’s 1966 italo western classic “Django”. Franco Nero returns as the titular gunslinger who has abandoned his former self and become a monk. He has to return when his daughter is kidnapped by former hungarian soldiers.
In some way, the opening makes clear what the film is gonna be. It tells you that the west is dead, it’s myths and legendary gunslingers too, all lying six feet underground or having ‘retired’. By 1987, the western genre was pretty much gone from the silver screens, especially the italo western.
While still capturing some of the italo western feeling and telling a story that is very western, “Django 2 - Il grande ritorno” is as much a western as it isn’t. Gone are the far dunes, the sand, the saloons and the classic western iconography.
Franco Nero is very good and delivers one bad-ass performance. We also have Christopher Connelly as the devilish antagonist and Donals Pleasence is a fun role.
While some parts seem a bit cheap, the action set pieces are very great and the film is a lot of fun. There could be a few cuts made here and there, but over all it is pretty entertaining. The film is mostly set in a jungle-esque landscape which I think is pretty awesome and the violence is pretty great too.
