Meh. I genuinely don't know how to feel about Huesera: The Bone Woman. I didn't really find the commentary very effective, which is unusual since I usually love social commentary. I thought the performance from Natalia Solián as Valeria Hernandez was good, with her showing a wide range of nuanced emotions with depth. I thought the scares were pretty bad, and pretty generic, and like they didn't have much thought put into them. It also doesnt do enough to stand out amongst other pregnancy horrors and feminist horrors, and kinda feels like a generic mix of the two. I don't think that the conventional family drama and the conventional supernatural horror blended well together. It was also too slow and didn't justify its length, dragging multiple times. Overall, this is a confidently directed debut, but its shortcomings are too heavy to make this a satisfying experience.
