upsetting to learn that most of micheaux's work is either lost or destroyed. both this and 'body and soul' were so good and vastly ahead of their time. even this film is partially lost, not enough to not know whats going on but it's still frustrating. fantastic film and i'll definitely return to it in the future.

The reactions to this film vs. "Birth of A Nation" tells me everything I need to know! The issue being that a family was shown during a lynching instead of the acts of lynching itself is..... insane. White audiences only want their heinous actions to show when they are the one painted in the limelight. They aren't uncomfortable with violence, but instead uncomfortable when they are not centered. It's okay for black people to be "othered" but they draw the line at themselves. This film is not only good, but beautiful and very important to the history of film!!

He used his own money from being a writer to make this an literally risked his life to create it and yet it has a higher level of discourse than almost any film regarding the black experience released today.

There is no excuse to not discuss contemporary problems wether it be Palestine or algorithms we owe it to ourselves and those who fought before us to cary the torch that lights the way of the future.
