I don’t know what it’s in the water in Brazil, but I continue to be impressed by the surreal, off the wall vision of Brazilian filmmakers. The Pink Cloud certainly hits different in a post-COVID world than the one director/writer Iuli Gerbase was living in when writing the film in 2017, but this only minimally detracts from Gerbase’s singular and gutsy vision.
White the whole quarantine/apocalypse setting initially gave me pause for obvious reasons, I am glad I pushed aside the reluctance. Beautifully shot in a pastel hued world, The Pink Cloud is a quiet and emotional character study about life inside an immaculate, yet suffocating bubble.
