National Theatre Live: Romeo and Juliet

My god. This was the breath of fresh air that I truly needed, that I had pined for in regards to film, and Josh O’Connor and Jessie Buckley came knocking with an oxygen tank in the form of this hour and a half masterclass in acting. I have been campaigning for acting performances of this level for ages, and to see two actors take a classic story and re-vamp it and make it their own with such fantastic chemistry, it blows me away
It’s incredibly deserving that the two leads in this production are now stars, but even in the supporting lineup, Tamsin Greig gives a great performance, and it’s all set to a fantastical backdrop that proves the point I’ve been attempting to hammer for ages:

these words from our distant past, still hold so much weight today despite how much our languages have evolved. we twist our brains, and we analyse his archaic world, trying best to relate them to our modern sensibilities. yet, the timbre and the rhythm of these words doesn’t demand full understanding of the text, they connect us, instead, through the raw emotions (and queerness) of the acting.

the skeletal and barren sets, utilising the backstage. the exposed clothing racks, prop cabinets, and refreshment stations. scenes with the backdrops of black stage walls. the deconstruction of art forms, where imagination truly comes into play. which truly suits a story as iconic and timeless as romeo and juliet.
