Kim Il-Sung and The PLA, save me from these Imperialist devils! 🇨🇳✊🇰🇵 The scale of this film is undeniably massive, and there are some solid action sequences throughout. There’s also some rad symbolism at play, particularly in how General MacArthur is portrayed. He’s essentially depicted as the Devil himself, which is fascinating. From a Chinese perspective, he might genuinely be seen that way by the public tho idk.
While much of the movie relies on a lot of green screen and subpar CGI there’s some impressive shots and the landscapes, despite the bad lighting, look good. That said, it’s not a great film in terms of quality. However, as propaganda, it’s likely quite effective. It made nearly $1 billion at the box office, and I don’t believe it had a worldwide release, given that it was produced by China’s “Publicity” Department.
Overall,
Pretty fascinating film honestly. If you like overly stylised, badly paced war films with decent cinematography you might enjoy this. It’s almost three-hours long tho and the English dialogue is very janky. Obviously not made for western audiences. But there’s worse American propaganda out there.. I just don’t think contemporary Western propaganda is as obvious. It’s structured like a bad American war film so maybe it is.
