The other side of Megalopolis, its penitent, regretful twin. Actually a very major work in the overall Coppola project. Finally released from the burden of commercial expectations or trying to remind people he’s “the guy that made The Godfather.” It’s 100% his voice, his own deeply saturated textures, his sprawling labyrinth of chrono-romance, the idea which would become his annd is still his chief thematic concern, its here Coppola has fully matured as an artist. And I really wish i could rate it five stars, it’s clear a rewatch is already in order. Much like Megalopolis, where i was entirely unsure what i thought of it on first viewing, all I knew was I was very mixed on the first half, but its my was my second viewing i truly loved it. Slightly different, I like Youth Without Youth a lot on first viewing, but there was a forty minute stretch after Laura dies and Veronica first appears where the Coppola seems to be content transitioning his waking dreamscape into standardly shot, simple archeology story and I did not jive with at all. But still, major major picture and only confirmed I must get on Tetro as soon as possible.
