I will never marginalize trauma that a woman has had dealing with an abusive or wicked man. This movie was a blatant condemnation of toxic masculinity, but I think there was a better way to do it. At a certain point it feels like Alex Garland is beating a dead horse. The casting and performances were great, as far that goes I think the writing and direction took a turn with the force feeding of social themes. I get it, a lot of men could be bad and evil. I just think it was a surface level view on what the actual issues are. This is a simplistic view on the VERY real violence that a woman faces day to day. The last 30 minutes is a literal WTF 😳 extreme body horror warning is advised. You might like this if you like heavy symbolic indie movies, this one is just not for me.

hi look at me i’m alex garland lemme pretend to be ari aster for a second! i made a movie centered around grief and loss with a very loose veil of “men are bad. and toxic masculinity.” and because i wanna be ari aster lemme slap a bunch of shit that doesn’t make sense to turn a nothingburger message into a 90 something minute hellscape, with the last 15 mins being the worst of course! what’s worse than people being stuffed in bears or one having their father be a giant penis inhabiting their mother’s home? could it be watching a leaf-faced man give birth out of his vagina to a boy with the same face, who then magically impregnates himself and gives birth from straight out the belly to a full grown man also with the same face, who then also impregnates himself to give birth out of his fucking back to another fully grown man with his face, who then impregnates himself and gives birth to yet another fully grown man from his fucking mouth, feet first?? no it couldn’t possibly….
