Another minimalist yet ethically intricate character study from Zvyagintsev. This film reminded me of Bong Joon Ho’s more recent socioeconomic commentaries in its subject matter especially. It took the dramatized maternal relationship of Mother and melded it with Parasite’s emphasis on social class disparity, to an intriguing effect. All in all, Elena is a solid, ambiguous piece that is only elevated by Zvyagintsev‘s sureness and direction.
(Also, Phillip Glass soundtrack so naturally it’s a great film) 83/100
