I watched 'Magazine Dreams' yesterday, and it was one of those films where the main character kept me intrigued the whole time they were on screen. This movie is incredibly dark, evoking a wide range of emotions as I watched it, and it really emphasizes the challenges some individuals face with mental health. In my opinion, this was Jonathan Majors' best performance. He is an AMAZING actor, and it's unfortunate that his career has faced setbacks due to unfortunate circumstances. However, I truly hope Hollywood will give him a second chance, and that he can regain his stardom. I'm really rooting for him!
Honestly what I really love about this movie is how it digs deep into our need for connection and validation. It shows how easy it is for people, especially those dealing with mental health issues or figuring out their identity, to feel invisible until their struggles blow up. It's really tough to see a guy who lost both his parents when he was young, trying to take care of his sick grandpa, all while chasing after his idol and figuring out where he fits in a world that just doesn’t seem to want him. I saw a lot of people like to compare this movie to ‘The Joker’ and ‘Taxi Driver,’ and I totally get that. It also makes me think of the movie 'Black Swan,' with its themes of lonely people trying to fit into what society sees as "perfect," only to end up losing themselves in the process.
Overall, this was an AMAZING movie featuring an AMAZING performance by Jonathan Majors. I love how the film illustrates the dangers of tying your self-worth to external validation—such as fame, appearance, or approval from others.
