When did we stop using paperweights and letter openers? What happened to floating bath thermometers? When did stacks upon stacks of diamond bracelets, bejewelled fur coats, and fuckass bobs go out of fashion? Why is it not socially acceptable to find love by falling into the arms of a stranger anymore? Look, the modern day is alright but it seems like the 1920s absolutely rocked. Watching movies like these and being able to look back into past eras truly makes you realise how much colour and glamour the world has lost. Shame.
Anyways, this film is spectacularly ahead of its time! The storyline was near perfect, the use of tension and pacing was masterful, and the score… wow. At times I was shocked at how well the scenes were directed, especially because it sometimes felt even better than modern storytelling despite the lack of creative resources and technology. This film had to have been one of the trailblazers that set the scene for hitchcockesque dramas and the spy genre in general. James Bond eat ur heart out tbh
