I don’t have much to say that other people haven't already said. Hero is ridiculous. One of the most beautiful historical epic films ever made. A masterclass in poetic action filmmaking. Zhang Yimou pays meticulous attention not just to the choreography, but also to the use of shutter speed and color, creating a visual feast where every shot or sequence flows like a moving painting. A film that is deeply rooted in the ideals of war, the tension between individual desires and the greater good, heroism, sacrifice, justice, and the pursuit of peace through unity. Furthermore, countless moments sent my jaw to the floor, especially with the film’s use of color. Some of the best we’ve probably ever seen. At just a little over 90 minutes, Yimou manages to tell a tale so larger-than-life it's almost baffling. There's no way this wasn't 2 and a half hours of storytelling. It's so dense, every sequence is so visually distinct. The characters don't just play mind games with one another, but the filmmakers play mind games with you. For sure a couple more watches are needed to fully appreciate this masterful tale.
