After a group of friends graduate from Delhi University, they listlessly haunt their old campus, until a British filmmaker casts them in a film she's making about freedom fighters under British rule. Although the group is largely apolitical, the tragic death of a friend owing to local government corruption awakens their patriotism. Inspired by the freedom fighters they represent in the film, the friends collectively decide to avenge the killing.

how do i even start…
for the past many many months i’ve been feeling restless about the state of my country, i cried about it, read about it, wrote a substack essay about it, considered changing my career about it too, nothing mattered. because real change can’t come from becoming a keyboard warrior in your home. you have to sacrifice your individuality for it. the history nerd i was before my teens knew this, but i lost my faith along the way.
i always knew this movie was revolutionary, was important to indian cinema, and i loved the album from a long time. but watching it today with a clear mind feels like my brain has been rewired. what a cast. what an album. what a screenplay. what a fucking message. i broke down halfway through and stopped only after it ended, because what is the point of me going to a good college and becoming a lawyer? i’m just a pawn in this system. there will be hundreds more like me - slightly privileged kids who are personally insulated from most problems and have the bandwidth to want to help others. nothing has changed in the 20 years since this was released, in fact it’s gotten worse. i fear i will end up like the characters some day. i need this movie blasted across every cinema hall for the next few weeks. when will we fucking wake up?

started like goofy college vibes, just friends messing around, then it slowly shifts and hits you with something heavier the tone change is so sharp you barely notice it until you are already deep in it laughing one moment, then sitting in silence the next

This would have been a 10/10 movie if Aamir Khan had spoken better Punjabi and there were fewer songs.
Nonetheless, the movie gave a really important message which is still relevant
The parallels drawn between the British rule and the current times was amazing
