In a small town in Wisconsin, a young teenage boy claims he has dreams of young women being brutally raped and murdered. A doctor and the local sheriff discover that the boy's dreams are real and that a sinister cult might be behind the brutal murders. If I remember correctly, this might be one of the slashers whose posters stuck with me ever since I started getting into the genre, so I’m glad I finally watched it. And it’s really good too.
Originally offered to David Cronenberg, this was ultimately directed by John Hough, who’s done his fair share of well-known and respected horror films, but the only one of his films I had seen before was “Howling IV: The Original Nightmare”, which is one of the most horrendous films ever made. Funny enough, that one isn’t even the worst of all the “The Howling” sequels. But don’t get me started on that shit-show of a franchise.
But “Incubus” is very good. It’s an atmospheric supernatural slasher that is darker than many others in the genre as it deals with a serious and not-at-all fun topic, but it’s still a very good time. The kill scenes are well-shot and the kill in the barn in particular was pretty amazing. You even have a sort of musical number in the middle as they just play some kind of music video in a theater in the film.
I don’t quite know what John Cassavetes is doing here and he’s always got this silly little smirk going on. Watching his face is really entertaining. The rest of the acting is a mixed bag, with some cool performances, but most are pretty forgettable.
Best thing about this is the ending tho. There is some awesome creature design and it has a real surprise in store. Given, I suspected a certain thing to happen the way it did, but that didn’t diminish the effect it had. The finale is absolutely awesome.
