Well acted, PSH is the goat, and interesting narrative structure but overall felt like it was missing something.

I was not expecting to see Phillip Seymour’s bare ass in the opening of this film. I could see why, because all this character really wanted was sex and dope. It set the tone. There was some really tremendous acting in this film particularly from PSH and Ethan Hawke. I really felt the love and hate they had for each other as brothers.

I haven’t seen much of Sidney Lumet’s work, besides one of my favorite Pacino films “Dog Day Afternoon”. He’s actually a legendary director going back to the late 50’s with 12 Angry Men. This was a beautifully shot film, the first time he used a digital format by the way. I loved how this story was deconstructed and told from different angles and eyes.

It was pretty cool seeing Rosemary Harris and Marisa Tomei in this, I realized half way through that they both played Aunt May in the Spider-Man franchises. The unraveling of both Ethan Hawke’s and PSH characters definitely add the most value to the suspense and action when it nears to the end. One of the better Heist films I’ve seen in recent memory.

Featuring some stellar acting from its lead actors, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead is a well-executed crime thriller that slowly devolves into chaos. The non-linear storytelling was a great choice, since it meant certain plot developments were revealed slowly and built anticipation as the characters kept digging their graves, and tension was built with every wrong move. Philip Seymour Hoffman absolutely gave the stand-out performance here, though Ethan Hawke was close behind, but the cast overall were excellent in their respective roles. On the whole, although I'm not sure if I'd watch it again (since I now know the twists and turns in the story), I really liked this film, and I think it's worth giving a go, especially if you're a fan of Hoffman or Hawke.

Weird editing, lighting + pace (derogatory). Overall though, an interesting story and amazing acting make this worth every moment.
