Watching The Kite Runner hit differently for me because I’m Afghan. A lot of movies show Afghanistan in such a distant or stereotypical way, but seeing parts of the culture, the language, and the childhood moments in Kabul made it feel way more personal. The early scenes almost feel warm and nostalgic before everything starts getting heavier.
The relationship between Amir and Hassan is honestly what makes the movie so painful to watch. Hassan’s loyalty is so pure that it almost hurts, and seeing how one moment changes Amir’s entire life just sits with you. The guilt he carries feels frustrating at times, but also very human.
For me the movie wasn’t just about friendship or redemption, it also felt like a reminder of how complicated Afghan history and identity can be, especially when war and displacement change everything. It’s not a comfortable watch, but it’s one that felt really personal.
Not a movie I’d say I “enjoyed,” but definitely one that stayed with me
As much as I cherish the movie, I prefer the book…
