Huh.
This movie is brilliant in so, so many ways. I never knew what to expect.
It’s hard to speak on this movie in one single review, because honestly every half hour felt like its own series in a way.
The first part was this insane, visually crowded hennenlotter kind of??? Tense and yet beautiful in the most fucked up way, view of the city and this apartment. It was darkly comedic and also there wasn’t a moment where I wasn’t freaking out on beau’s behalf. It was INSANE. The birthday boy stabber had me screaming in delight
The second set piece, Nathan lane’s house, was so brutally wrong. So domestic and especially the daughter!!! Jesus Christ her performance is UNHINGED.
Also when bill hader showed up I was so shocked that I just incoherently screamed for five straight minutes, and periodically for the next 2 hours and 20 minutes I just yelled “I miss bill hader.”
That third piece. The theatre and art of it all, absolutely STUNNING. The masks were HORRIFIC and I couldn’t even look away for a moment. Just. Actually beautiful. I could watch another 3 hours of this way of storytelling.
Absolutely the best part of the movie (but I really liked the start, too.)
I LOVED the flashbacks. And I loved the ending and PATTI LUPONE CHILL THE FUCK OUT
