“I’m a journalist, I am my only subject, and I am live reporting from my brain” - Robbie Williams response during Q&A
This score has been a bit of a culmination of the recent days and this showing. The movie has gained a ton of great buzz, I snagged tickets for a showing with a live Q&A, and the movie itself ended up being really fucking good.
The Q&A raised the obvious question of “Why the monkey?”. The answer was simple yet made so much sense as to why I really enjoyed this compared to other biopics I have seen. He is depicted as a CGI monkey because the focus of every biopic ever from a viewers perspective always ends up being focused around how well the actor portrays the person. When you remove that element it narrows down the viewers focus in the story, emotions, and vulnerability that is being shown. Weird, for sure, but excellently done.
While I learned that through Q&A, it is absolutely not mentioned during the movie itself, which I honestly think is a huge drawback. Especially in the U.S., people don’t really know who Robbie Williams is. I think there isn’t as much incentive to find out when you think you’re just seeing some movie about a pop star monkey, which is absolutely what I thought going in.
One thing I desperately wish was brought up in the Q&A, but was not, is why this a being marketed so heavily in the U.S. People here really don’t know who he is. I hope word of mouth marketing helps here though because the film really was excellent.
