I liked and enjoyed what Duke Johnson was going for here, although the story wasn’t very compelling. Making this movie feel like a stage play created a perfect vessel for that confusing / unsettling vibe when Kaufman is involved. André Holland was exceptional; selling both the stage acting and the guy stuck in a Kaufman. Loved the Judy McGibbons scene so much.
Unfortunately the “tell don’t show” romance story doesn’t provide much of an emotional core for me. Thematically it’s more about his happiness and identity than about their romance. Stylistically, it fits that Edna is just a character with a narrow role. So I’m just left thinking about the movie and not so much feeling it.
