The story of Edgardo Mortara, a young Jewish boy living in Bologna, Italy, who in 1858, after being secretly baptized, was forcibly taken from his family to be raised as a Christian. His parents’ struggle to free their son became part of a larger political battle that pitted the papacy against forces of democracy and Italian unification.

vu à la médiathèque, excellent film !! certes un peu long par moment mais le sujet abordé est extrêmement intéressant, surtout en tant que chretienne de voir les dégâts et les fractures que la doctrine catholique/papale a causé

Kidnapped
Director- Marco Bellochio. The movie is inspired by the true story of Edgardo Mortara, a young Jewish boy who was abducted from his family in the mid-nineteenth century. He was only seven years old at that time.It sheds light on the arrogance of the church officials by believing in their superiority. It shows the pompousness, anti-Semitism, and egoistical behavior of the pope. With all the newfound information about the sexual abuse inflicted by the Church, one can only assume what was inflicted on the kidnapped boys. The scene where Edgardo turned against the pope on the bridge when they wanted to throw his body over made me think that Edgardo still managed to keep his sense of self even with the abuse. If that's the case then it should have been handled in a different manner rather than the melodramatic way.The scene where the pope goes to the roof when Rome is being attacked feels weird. Made it seem like the pope was off his rocker or high on the water. The music made the movie overly dramatic.Feels too ambitious than the themes in the movie allowed.
