A very bleak view of post-WWII Germany. Almost every shot shows real buildings falling apart from the aftermath of the bombings of Berlin. I enjoyed seeing what felt like a glimpse of history with the conditions people were living in. I’ve always wondered about the post-war sentiment for the German people, so it was nice to see that shown in many different ways throughout the film.
However, actual plot of this movie I felt could’ve used a bit more. We basically just follow the most gullible 12 year old as he gets scammed, gets involved in crime, and gets touched on in a really creepy way by his former teacher, all so he can make a few bucks to get food for his family.
I know he felt he had to do something to get some money because his dad was dying and his ex-nazi brother refused to register, but surely the average 12 year old wasn’t that dumb to do what he does at the end. I think I would’ve been fine with that if the movie ends in a different way, maybe with some optimism. I’m probably too hung up on the disparities of his actions, but it is what it is.
I’ll definitely be checking out more of Fellini’s work. I enjoyed the way this was shot and paced, with a good score behind it to provide suspense and tension. I just wish the ending had been a bit different and I think that’s my only real hang up on my rating.
