Boyega is great.
Definitely have empathy for people in Brian’s shoes. This country is fundamentally broken and there is no indication that it will ever improve for anyone other than the ultra-rich.
I am, however, getting a little tired of the trope of the bank robber/captor who “isn’t like the other felons” because he is nice and has good manners. Dog Day Afternoon perfected it, but that was half a century ago. John Q also did it, and this felt very similar to that. It definitely makes it easier to side with the captor, but it isn’t a very interesting way to tell a story anymore. It is no longer special.
Brian is one of millions of victims to this blood-thirsty and merciless country and he deserves to have his story told. Boyega’s performance did him justice, but the rest of the movies isn’t anything I haven’t already seen.
