newjeans is protecting my honmoon.
unironically a good movie, but not a great one. my thesis boils down to: this should have been a 10-12 episode anime and it would’ve ate down.
the songs, great. pulled out pretty much nothing but bangers and highlighted most popular styles of kpop in a charicature style that still felt genuine. i love a theme of internal strife and a desire to express oneself. generally humanizing and strong female idol leads (from my perspective). i was rooting for those girlies. animation style also unique and quite pleasant, the visuals were great.
the lore could’ve been done so much better - the movie was so fast paced, which i like, but they left so many motives, relationships, world building pieces left untied and unfinished that it was hard to see this as a finished piece of art. story and style that is right up my alley, if executed differently could see being a near all timer.
watched with @michellejec half in florida and half in austin

honestly based off all the internet discourse my expectations were really high for this movie
did it live up to the hype? no.
the soundtrack was great. the animation was beautiful (though I personally am not in love with the style) the storyline was unique and fresh but the writing and actual story progression fell flat for me
still, i respect all sony animation is doing for the industry and for that alone i am excited to continue to support movies like this! few studios these days are willing to take risks and push the medium forward. even fewer are willing to do it with original IP. so thank you to whatever execs decided to greenlight this fever dream of a movie 😂

the idea is 10stars but the execution is so far off, that it is another entity itself
i had high hopes and the first 15 mins delivered and then it went downhill. everything felt way too underdeveloped & rushed except (maybe) for the huntrix girlies. I had fun and enjoyed the animation, but didn’t think the storyline worked in many ways (honmoon lore, jinu, romantic relationships, the rest of the saja boys personalities or lack of, so many sub-themes about kpop culture)
best part was the Golden intro non-Rumi’s lines. Mira ATE with the problem child bars & i cried.
watched with @luke and have no clue why he ranked it so high
