This is one of those films that I would never in a million years watch had it not been for this ongoing Palme D’Or Winners Project I’ve been taking my time with.
I enjoyed it, I guess. It’s nothing special. There isn’t much to write about. I find it hard to believe that this won the Palme D’Or! It’s just very delicate, it has a very light touch and it doesn’t aspire to do much.
Sarah Miles is incredibly captivating in all of the very few roles I’ve seen her in. But Robert Shaw is the real star here, balancing resentment, jealousy, longing, and passion in a difficult and emotional performance.
The direction is very…plain. I think that’s how I’d describe this movie: plain. Except for Robert Shaw. He’s far from it.
