This was way harder to watch than I expected.
I kind of understand why it doesn’t have the highest ratings, because this is the kind of movie that really depends on how much you connect with it. If you’re a teenager or you’ve gone through something similar at that age, it can hit really hard.
The soundtrack is beautiful and very powerful, it adds a lot to the emotional weight of the film. The camera work is solid too, nothing flashy but it serves the story well.
Hugh Jackman is incredible here. The way he plays a worried father trying to help, while also repeating some of the same mistakes his own father made, is honestly brutal to watch. Zen McGrath also does a really strong job. There are moments where he pulls you in so much that you genuinely feel worried for him.
The rest of the cast is great as well, with Vanessa Kirby, Laura Dern and Anthony Hopkins all adding depth to the story.
And yeah… the story itself is tough. Watching someone so young go through that level of pain is heartbreaking. There are moments that feel very close to home, and sometimes you can clearly see the lies he tells and how his parents just accept them, which makes it even more frustrating.
I do wish the film explored the mental health aspect a bit more in depth, especially through therapy and the process of getting help. That could have added even more to it.
The flashbacks showing his father’s relationship in the past are actually really beautiful and add an interesting layer to everything.
And the ending… yeah, that broke me. It’s just emotionally devastating.
This isn’t a movie everyone will connect with, but if it hits you, it hits hard. It’s raw, heavy, and honestly kind of brutal.
