One would assume after seeing a name like that … Gaspar Noe would follow suit down the road of sensory overload & provocative shock poetry .
But rather than what we all expected … he uses this moment to show us another side of him we haven’t seen . More personal , contemplative and restrained than ever . With a gentle & tender touch to it . This is used as a canvas , for a moment of catharsis for Gaspar Noé . The maturity and range from Noé here are so refreshing . This hits too close to home if you have / had old parents .
The legendary Dario Argento as the rare lead actor is great . Also he is a big Gaspar Noé inspiration , and he was really incredible . Françoise Lebrun MY OH MY was she something else , what a performance . Teetering on Ellen Burstyn levels of under appreciated for her devotion here . They are putting in absolute clinics for their age respectively .
The cluttered apartment was merely a character itself ; serving as a reflection of their mind , what a fine detail . The split screen works far better than anticipated , I expected it to get old or gimmicky … but done with the care presented was 100% the right call .

Guide to Gaspar Noé & Bonus Bullshit
If you’re skeptical about Noé , and if you WON’T be able to swallow getting into his work— start with Vortex . You will grasp the reoccurring themes he discusses , and learn he can indeed be sensible . One of his stronger works , and very moving . Be ready for a slow burn .
If you’re confident you can handle him … I’d start with Climax ; full throttle Noé , you’re grabbing at every aspect of his filmmaking . It’s faster paced , straightforward , and compared to his other work … digestible and accessible .
if you’re epileptic , you’re gonna have to lookup a watch guide … you probably can’t even watch this directors work except Vortex .
Enter the Void could also be used as a starting point as a mix of the two . Vortex is a fantastic bookend piece to his filmography though , glad I saved it for last . I presume it’s the equivalent to watching something like an Ikiru for your last of the filmography .
Gaspar Noe is one of the most brilliant filmmakers & artists of the 21 century .

I still haven’t read a review that highlights even 65-70% of what is so special about this , and it certainly won’t be written here . But hopefully he gets on his next film soon ( 6 years + since he was last in production ) , the idea he might only ; if I’m lucky , have 4 - 5 more features out in the next 23 years ( my age rn ) is depressing to realize . I need more now .
