It’s not easy being a kid. It’s even harder being a kid in a war-torn country. I couldn’t begin to imagine what it’s like to experience life as Manuel, the son of a farmer who lives in the mountains of Colombia in the middle of a war between the guerilla fighters and the paramilitary. The Colors Of The Mountain focuses on his story, but I must say, I was impressed by the performances of all the children in this film - they gave a very honest portrayal of the tragic reality they face yet know little about. All they see and feel are the absences at school, the frightful clamoring of choppers in the night, and the tension between parents that loom thick in the air. The tale that unfolds from their perspective is a very sad one, yet there is something very beautiful about it. Hearing and seeing things from a child’s perspective is quite enlightening - it’s an eye opening experience. Kids are smarter than adults give them credit for. The older you get the harder it is to remember that you were once a kid. It’s good to try and remember back to that. And that’s kind of what this film did for me - made me remember.
