Crimes of the Future has an interesting approach and effective body horror, but it gets lost in the unnecessarily confusing story and a dystopian world that is not explored enough. It does have great production design, a chilling score, and some foot performances from the leads, but what that remains is a film that tries to tell too much, such as art, artistic morality, evolution, the future, being human, and sensuality, but ends up telling too little.

the first time i watched it, i was mostly taking in the world and all the body horror ideas, but coming back to it, i connected way more with how strangely sad and intimate it feels. it’s still gross and weird in the most cronenberg way possible, but there’s also this quiet emotional core underneath all of it that hit me harder this time. i appreciated the atmosphere way more too. the whole movie feels exhausted, like humanity has evolved past normal feeling and doesn’t really know what to do anymore. everyone seems disconnected from their own bodies, but also obsessed with them at the same time. what i really loved on rewatch is how calmly the movie presents everything. surgery as art, pain disappearing, people treating mutation like the next stage of life, it never overexplains any of it. it just lets you exist in that world, and the longer i sat with it, the more fascinating it became. it went from a movie i admired to one i genuinely loved. weird, cold, intimate, and kind of beautiful in its own disturbing way.

hmmm I wonder what plastic takes like kidding I don’t wonder. 
last 30 mins superb, lots of great twists and full of cronenburgs usuall strangeness. needed more Kristen Stewart she was oddly great whatever she was doing it needed more
