We randomly talked about this in class today and yeah… instant trip back to my childhood.
I’m probably not the most objective person here because I’ve seen this movie so many times. I literally had the DVD and used to watch it on repeat during car trips. It was that movie for me. And honestly, rewatching it now… it still holds up pretty well.
The visual effects, for the time, are actually quite good. The creatures, the fairies, even some of the transitions still look solid and have that magical feel. The soundtrack also hit me with a wave of nostalgia, and the camera work is perfectly fine for what the movie is.
Freddie Highmore does a really good job, especially playing both roles. I’ve always liked Jared a bit more, but both characters work well. The rest of the cast is solid too, with Sarah Bolger, Seth Rogen, David Strathairn, Nick Nolte and Mary-Louise Parker all fitting nicely into the story.
And the story itself… I just love it. A fantasy world hidden within ours, full of creatures, with an ogre villain trying to get his hands on a powerful book… that’s exactly the kind of thing I was obsessed with as a kid.
It worked for me back then, and it still works now.
The ending is kind of fun too, even if a bit simple. I do wish we had gotten more movies in this universe to explore it further, because there’s definitely potential there.
For me, this is pure childhood. And yeah, in my humble opinion, it’s a great movie.
Give it a try.
