Goodbye First Love is a well-made film that explores common themes in an uncommon way. The weirdest thing about this film is how it always seems to be in a rush to get to the next scene. However, in the next scene nothing important happens as it rushes to the next scene. It’s weird because the movie’s pacing is incredibly slow. I saw it in another review and I think they said it best. It feels like you are watching fragments of a story, so although it feels a bit disconnected for us, we can imagine it from the main character’s point of view. Overall I found this film to be solid. It had great characters and themes, a solid story, and a good message. The main actress did a phenomenal job. One thing I didn’t like was the ending. The film acknowledges that she is cheating but never really brings it up again in any sort of way. It’s not glorifying cheating, but it doesn’t necessarily condemn it either which is a big hiccup for me when it comes to liking the protagonist. I was surprised with how long they established the relationship at the beginning of the film. It’s like 45 minutes before the actual premise of the film happens but I appreciate it. The impact and quality of Goodbye First Love mostly relies on your ability to connect with the themes, character, and atmosphere of the film. I can see why so many people love this as it’s a unique approach to stereotypical themes but I wasn’t able to fully connect with it on an emotional level. Still a good watch.
