While it probably doesn't entirely deserve a rating of this quality, the theatrical experience left so much to be desired that I felt the need to make a statement. Any attempts at creating an actual story to tell were marred by an incredible lack of creativity or capacity to promote interest in what was going on. By far the most egregious creative decision was to spend a large portion of the movie revealing essential storytelling elements through subtitles, since the most essential characters spoke exclusively through telepathy. Not only was this annoying and harmed the viewing experience, but it also undid any goodwill the franchise had created by representing a mute character by making her not, in fact, truly mute. While I'm sure that it is the dream of many who suffer from the same condition to be able to communicate telepathically, I'm not so sure that it's the right move portray your only mute character as only truly belonging with others like her, being entirely incapable of integrating into the rest of society.
While the visual effects to stand out to an extent as a redeeming quality of the work, it is nothing groundbreaking and the final conflict comes across as nearly identical as shown in previous Godzilla or Kong movies, simply with new giant monsters to fight.
Ultimately, the movie comes across as a failed attempt at creatively innovating, resulting only in a disappointingly ill-conceived story told through an irritating medium with a shockingly boring and un-creative climax.
2/10. Not worth your time.
