So story time:
A couple years ago we adapted Eighth Grade at our high school for a competition play and our dumbasses dm’d Bo on Instagram after doing really well with the show basically telling him about the show and thanking him for writing a bomb ass movie... not knowing we didn’t have permission from him to adapt the play and he could’ve easily shut down our production with one phone call. And he responded in like 5 minutes basically saying how cool it was that we were doing Eighth Grade as a group interpretation since he did it a lot in high school and misses it a lot... and then he asked if we could send him a recording of our production so he could watch it. So yeah, shoutout Bo Burnham for being really cool and not fining us thousands of dollars for adapting his script without permission.
But back to this. If you are an artist in literally any form, this is going to hit home for you hardcore. The way he’s able to constantly keep it relatable and engaging and self reflective is mind blowing to me. I don’t know how many of my fellow writers or actors can vouch for me but only about 1/3 of what we create is actually shared with the world. For many reasons, mostly down to self doubt and thinking no one will like it. I know at least for me I have SO MANY projects I do outside of YouTube that either I never share, or very few people see just because I’m constantly insecure about my work. Believe it or not I’m an actor most of the time and when COVID hit I was in the middle of 2 productions that completely shut down a week before we were supposed to show them. That sucked. Ever since then it’s just been harder and harder to create things, but this really made me want to get off my ass and write a screenplay or something. I don’t know I liked it a lot and if you’re an artist in some form I guarantee you will too.
