“we’re creatures of the underworld, we can’t afford to love”
this has nicole kidman - so it’s impossible for me to dislike it. surprisingly, i liked it a lot more than expected. i get it’s a little bit divisive - you really either hate it or love it. i had a massive headache afterwards, but i just had so much fun. i’ve gotten more and more into musicals recently, i kinda used to hate how people would just randomly break into song and dance - but recently i’ve learnt how to have fun, and musicals for the most part (dancer in the dark definitely excluded) are light hearted, campy fun with a romantic central theme. before watching i didn’t really know what to expect, while i’m going to see the stage show later, the only thing i really knew about moulin rouge! was ‘lady marmalade’ - which is unironically a banger. but honestly, the soundtrack in general was immaculate. i always love a jukebox musical moment - from madonna to david bowie. the songs are totally catchy and is easily one of the factors that made me fall in love with this movie as much as i did. also, i love how nicole kidman can not only give a killer performance, but also entrancing vocals. she truly has it all. another thing which i adored, probably my favourite feature of this film, is the visuals. i’m a believer that style is more important than substance: so this was truly the perfect movie for me. everything is just super stylised - from its rapid fire editing, extremely saturated colour (blue and red especially), extremely over-the-top, theatrical set designs and just generally a great spectacle and gorgeous cinematography. i love neon-soaked sets, and therefore i think moulin rouge! just automatically gets a 4.5, i really don’t care what anyone says lmao. both lead actors of ewan mcgregor and nicole kidman not only both have a really amazing performance, but have so much chemistry on screen. especially nicole kidman, i adored her performance as satine (but i love every performance from her). the way she both portrays her as a sexy seductress but also a tragic character who suffers from the patriarchy and the hardships of life in general. it had some great messages on how love is one of the most important parts of the universe, and i parade this movie for how well it balances tragic emotional resonance and just generally having a great aesthetic going for it. this movie totally reinforces my love for musicals, and definitely one of my new musicals, unforgettable: and the songs are still stuck in my head. it’s a breathtaking, innovative jukebox musical with dazzling sets. simultaneously being campy/maximalist while still having this melodramatic emotional core which is great.
