Film has several non-cliché ideas, yet it still somehow feels like a cheap, overly simple horror film. The atmosphere and home-video sequences are genuinely unsettling, but once the movie starts relying on jump scares, the fear becomes shallow and predictable. I couldn’t sympathize with the main character at all, which made it hard to care about his fate beyond a surface level. What almost works is the restraint. Not everything is fully explained but even the small amount of revelation weakens the tension enough to knock the rating down for me. Still, the ending lands better than expected, leaving a darker aftertaste than the film itself manages to sustain.
