coming to this after metropolitan and barcelona, i was looking for that stillman idiosyncrasy, witty, self-serious young people talking themselves into and out of ideas with complete conviction and it is here in traces but never quite coheres the same way. the film feels very 2011, that specific register of collegiate oddness that dates it immediately. i laughed a couple of times and some of the absurdity lands, but it feels like stillman doing a version of himself rather than the thing itself.
an acquired taste. you have to already be on his wavelength for this one to work, and i was only partially there.
