I was so ready to love this movie… it’s an adaptation of my favourite Shakespeare, it has the first fully electric score, it has beautiful set design is just generally iconic. However this movie is so deeply sexist it’s impossible to fully enjoy. I’d have to use the Krell IQ boosting machine to fully grasp the bona fide 50s sexism on display here and then die in the process.
This movie is pseud boomer patriachism distilled. The men show no tenderness to each other, and the movie’s big twist and essential message is that deep down in our subconscious we are all violent monsters. Like. Okay.
