“we have to tape everything, pablo. for fucks sake”
one of the first films i logged on letterboxd, and was probably one of my favourite movies of all time at that time (now it definitely isn’t, but i still really enjoyed it). found footage as a whole isn’t really something i’m that interested in, as a lot of it is unoriginal slop that really isn’t effective at all. i would honestly say [REC] is easily the best of its kind, while others such as ‘host’, ‘gonjiam haunted asylum’ and even ‘the blair witch project’ to an extent are all great in their own right and are all uniquely scary, nothing could compare to the excellence of this 2007 mockumentary style horror that shows an outbreak of an extreme rabies esque virus, and is probably one of the scarier horror movies i’ve seen (not as scary on a rewatch, but in comparison to american horror it’s a lot more effective). i’m usually a hater of jumpscares, but they’re surprisingly quite well used in this flick, this movie has some of the best portrayals of zombies i’ve ever seen, they’re super threatening just because of their speed and how vulnerable everyone is to contracting this disease. the acting is really strong, and it honestly blends comedic elements with zombie horror, which allows the product to really pop. every horror fan should see this movie atleast once, and i’m glad i gave this a rewatch, just because both of the sequels were quite garbage.
