“Winter must be cold for those with no warm memories.”
And then I cried. Directed by Leo McCarey, An Affair to Remember is a beat for beat remake of his 1939 film Love Affair. McCarey loved the film so much, he wanted to remake it in Technicolor, and he did just that. Adding a more humorous twist on the straightforward romance to his original film, we get Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, who ooze chemistry throughout this film.
McCarey adds a lot more stunning cinematography that goes beyond just adding color. I absolutely love the use of mirrors in this film. There’s one where Kerr swings her glass door open and the Empire State Building reflects in the glass. And near the end, Grant barges into a room and sees a painting that we can see through a mirror. I adore the innovative shots, it adds a lot more charm to an already beautiful film.
