Middle of Nowhere won’t be for everyone, as it can become a frustrating watch. We may not know what Ruby should do in totality — as it does cover the expectations others place on you — but there is one decision everyone (audience included) is waiting on her to make herself.
More focus on the dynamic between her mother and sister or what her relationship with Derek looked like prior to prison would’ve added better context as to why the decision is so difficult in the first place.
It’s an internal story for sure, that Corinealdi does an excellent job leading. Ava DuVernay directs with such intimacy; the script however, I wish went deeper so much so, I think completely removing Brian as a character would’ve served the story better.

Given a Wrinkle in Time and now this, I think I prefer DuVernay’s documentaries over her fictional storytelling. This film is definitely emotional, but it feels void in most areas which makes it hard to connect with the characters. The ending monologue was also a bit too cheesy for my taste as well at the end.
