turning a 10 hour game into a 2 hour "movie" means there are quite a few things you have to streamline for it to stay effective, but i found the digital graphic novel did not do that well
lengthy sections are just plucked from the original despite them being designed for a more active and prolongued experience which makes it feel all a bit boring
inversely a lot of what gives the original its character (namely the humour) is replaced with charmless generic action lines which feel out of place for these characters and this world
anyway, the real reason im watching this is to celebrate finally finishing chapter 5 of peace walker which was a lot of fun!
my only real complaint about the game is that the "fanservice" (pandering to the male gaze) is way overboard, because even though it was definitely present in the other games it just felt a lot more pervasive and gross. i see some people trying to say this makes kojima a sexist which i dont think is true at all, people are nuanced enough to believe in gender equality whilst simultaneously taking advantage of the predominately male gaming market. in that regard he has better credentials than most filmmakers because of all his well written female characters, instead of having a 100% consistency of one dimensional women. on the broader scale i dont think manipulating the sexual desire of the audience is very different from any other emotion but there are good and sensible ways to do it and peace walker puts itself over the line in my opinion by having features designed exclusively for being creepy (model viewer, cutscene zoom, date with paz).
besides that rant i really enjoyed how it continues big boss's development, introduces both new and familiar faces and also doing some extra ops, particularly fulton recovery missions. interesting change of gameplay which im optimistic in continuing with in the phantom pain which i will be playing soon (but considering i have end of year exams i may have to put that on hold for some time). it would be cool to see peace walker as the next remake, hopefully with some of the problems toned down (i dont expect them to be removed), i like seeing this franchise continue because to me its all 10/10! except for this digital graphic novel i guess lol
