HAPPY BIRTHDAY WILLEM DAFOE!!!! Willem is my favorite actor. Honestly, he’s my favorite celebrity. He’s probably my favorite artist, but people like David Lynch also hold a very special place in my heart. Dafoe has never given a bad performance in my opinion, he is the purest and realest and most versatile actor to ever grace the silver screen. He can do anything, he can be anything, he can be whoever he wants to be. Iconic role after iconic role. Big blockbuster films, small indie flicks, even arthouse cinema. The man knows no bounds. He’s been the lead, he’s been a supporting cast member, he’s been in teeny tiny little roles, yet he gives it his all every single time. The Boondocks Saints is no exception. This is, in my opinion, his best performance or at least my favorite of his. Say what you will about the movie itself, it kind of sucks, but Willem truly shines. He acts CIRCLES around everybody else in this, he is truly insane as Smecker. I only like this movie because of Willem and if he weren’t in it, this would be abysmal and nobody would like it (people already don’t like it WITH Willem, imagine the hate it would get WITHOUT him). Anyway, the reason I think this is Dafoe’s best performance is because he’s all over the place. He’s a detective, he’s gay, he’s homophobic, he does drag, he loves opera/classical music (he has a connection to it), he’s energetic, he’s silly, he screams, he cusses like a madman, he jokes around, he dances, he kills, he kisses a man, and he utters the line “There was a firefight!” with such dedication and pure lunacy that anybody who has seen this, even if they do not like it, have to admit that Dafoe is giving 110% even when the film itself isn’t all that great. In Willem’s mind, HE is making the movie great, HE is carrying the weight of the film on HIS shoulders. I mean hey, some of the action is cool, but for the most part, I was bored when Willem wasn’t on screen. Perhaps I love Dafoe a little too much, but who doesn’t. Happy Birthday to the ABSOLUTE GOAT. He’s 70 and still starring in multiple films a year, what a legend. He WILL win an Oscar VERY soon.
